Dear Martial Arts School Owner,

Chan Lee here. If you've had any interaction with me over the last few years, you know I'm a HUGE believer in getting students more involved with your school than just their time on the mat and something I call "educational marketing."

See, we're experts in child development -- but you can't advertise expertise. Think about it -- does the best heart surgeon in your area do any advertising?

My Partner, Allen Oelschlaeger, told me years ago -- "you can ONLY DEMONSTRATE expertise, you can't advertise it."

That one comment has revolutionized the marketing of my school.

Allen told me that, if I wanted to be recognized as the local authority in child development (in Al's terms, a "Big Shot") -- and have customers chasing me rather than the other way around -- I needed to SHOW folks out in the community what I do.

Anyway, that's the origins of "educational marketing" -- where I spend NO money on advertising (other than the Google Pay-Per-Click ads that's part of the monthly services of the Digital Enrollment Director -- I want all the online visitors I can get).

Instead, 100% of my marketing focus is on DEMONSTRATING my expertise out in my community.

I don't have room to go into exactly how I do that here but let me share a little secret that took me years to learn:

I'm going to say that again because it's so darn important:

In other words, the very best way to demonstrate that you're the local authority is to have your students out in the community acting as your ambassadors.

Well, let me tell you, it's pretty tough to do that when the ONLY interaction you have with students is on the mat -- two or three times per week. As I said above, it is critically important to get your students MORE involved with your school than just their time on the mat
